80G and 12A Registration
Introduction
NGOs in India can significantly benefit from 80G and 12A registrations under the Income Tax Act, 1961. These registrations not only provide tax exemptions to the NGOs but also make the donors eligible for tax deductions, enhancing the NGO's ability to attract more donations. Understanding and obtaining these registrations are crucial for NGOs to maximize their impact and ensure compliance with Indian tax laws.

LEGAL FRAMEWORK
12A Registration
Section 12A of the Income Tax Act allows tax exemption for the entire income of an NGO. This is the first step in becoming fully tax-exempt. To be eligible, NGOs must not have any income generated from a profit motive and must maintain regular accounts.
80G Registration
Section 80G of the Income Tax Act allows donors to avail tax deductions on their donations to the NGO. This is a significant incentive for donors as it reduces their taxable income. To obtain 80G certification, NGOs must not have any income not exempted, including business income.
